Designing for the quietest screen
Safe zones, type fitting, contrast, credits, and the odd constraints of a lock screen.
A lock screen is not a poster with a clock added later. It is a contested surface: iOS owns the top, notifications rise from the bottom, photography carries its own focal point, and a lesson still needs enough room to breathe.
Begin with the unavailable space
WallCab keeps the upper portion of every canvas deliberately quiet. The Dynamic Island and clock vary by device and by a person’s own iOS configuration, so the renderer treats the whole region as unavailable rather than trying to fit text between system elements.
The teaching content begins near the middle and moves downward in a clear order: concept, definition, quotation, an optional personal note, then source credit.
Fit meaning, not just characters
Simple character counting is not enough. An uppercase word with many wide letters behaves differently from a short narrow word; line length changes with the font size; a definition needs more generous leading than a source line.
WallCab uses bounded wrapping and font-size steps. Provider content that still cannot make a calm composition fails validation before rendering. The purpose of a wallpaper is repeated, effortless reading—not proving that every possible paragraph can be squeezed into a phone.
Contrast comes from composition
Daily photographs are unpredictable. A permanent dark box behind the lesson would be safe, but it would also flatten every visual theme into the same card. Instead, the renderer adds a tuned gradient that preserves more of the image near the top and creates a stable reading field below.
The fixed WallCab Originals follow the same rule. AMOLED is not merely “the dark one”; it uses the absence of image detail as part of the composition. Minimal, Abstract, Gradient, Black & White, and Grid each keep a distinct, constant visual structure while sharing one typographic system. Photo themes such as Forest and Space continue to change at each daily rollover.
Credit belongs on the object
Attribution cannot depend on someone remembering which web page generated an image they saved yesterday. A compact credit travels with every PNG. The full Sources page explains the provider and license trail, but the wallpaper itself always identifies where its lesson and image came from.
This constraint improves the design. It creates a final baseline, reminds us that knowledge is not anonymous, and keeps provenance visible in the exact place the work is used.
